Cantacuzino Castle officially opens the international exhibition “Archimedes and the Greek Origins of Technology”, a major cultural and educational project created in collaboration with the prestigious Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology in Greece.
The exhibition brings to Romania some of the most spectacular functional reconstructions of inventions and mechanisms created in the ancient Greek world, offering the public the opportunity to discover the origins of technologies that decisively influenced the development of modern civilization.
Dedicated to the genius of Archimedes and the great inventors of Antiquity, the exhibition brings together more than 40 interactive exhibits, reconstructed based on original historical sources. Visitors will be able to explore mechanisms that demonstrate that concepts such as robotics, automation, programming, mechanical calculation, telecommunications, and hydraulic engineering have their roots more than two millennia ago.
Among the exhibition’s key pieces are the reconstruction of the famous Antikythera Mechanism, considered the first analog computer in human history, the first known functional robot, ancient telecommunications systems, highly precise astronomical devices, as well as inventions attributed to remarkable figures such as Archimedes, Hero of Alexandria, Philo of Byzantium, and Ctesibius.
Through its interactive character, the exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to understand not only what these mechanisms looked like, but also the operating principles behind inventions that are still used today.
Created by Greek engineer and researcher Kostas Kotsanas, the collection is part of the heritage of the Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology, an institution with locations in Athens, Ancient Olympia, Katakolon, Heraklion, and Rhodes. The museum’s exhibitions have been presented over the years in prestigious institutions around the world, including South Korea, Singapore, Australia, the United States of America, Egypt, and Italy.
